The quote above seems innocent enough and warms the heart. However it's been quite a while since Confucius wrote this but our realities have changed, especially in third world countries. So is it time to rethink and recoin this saying ? .....
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach him to fish and he becomes an active member of the army creating the imbalance that will eventually destroy an entire ecosystem.
We see this with the dwindling fish stocks in Lake Victoria, dessimation of water catchments ares like the Mau forest and the subsequent drying up of lakes accross Kenya. This points to the need for us to shift the focus from teaching man how to fish and instead teach him to be sustain the earth so that it can in turn sustain him.
